Dubai furniture buyers comparing sofas need a checklist built on documented construction facts rather than marketing claims. Solomia Home, the Dubai showroom whose catalogue carries italian furniture brands such as Flexform, B&B Italia, Boffi and Porada, also stocks lighting and rugs alongside its sofas. Knowing what sits beneath the upholstery helps a buyer separate a properly engineered sofa from a lookalike when browsing Italian furniture brands in Dubai.
A sofa built to last rests on specific choices: the frame, the webbing, the foam, the down, the wood and the glue. European test standards then check part of those choices. A buyer walking into any of the luxury furniture brands in Dubai should ask for the paperwork that proves these elements exist inside the piece they are considering.
- Ask the showroom for the maker’s leather or fabric datasheet before you pay a deposit.
- If the cushions are down, ask whether the down carries the Assopiuma Gold Label.
- Ask for the EN 12520 and EN 1021 test reports, and remember neither proves how long the upholstery lasts.
- Ask for the OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 certificate of the chosen fabric.
What materials form the frame and suspension?
The frame carries the load, so it is the first thing to ask about. B&B Italia was established in 1966 by Piero Ambrogio Busnelli, and its Coronado project matched an iron frame with cold moulded polyurethane foam, a combination the company introduced to the furnishing sector, according to B&B Italia. Flexform describes its Gregory sofa as a sleek metal structure with cowhide webbing and goose-down cushions.
Bonaldo began in 1936 with blacksmith Giovanni Vittorio Bonaldo producing iron bedsteads, meshes and mattresses, and first showed a collection at the Salone del Mobile in 1971, Bonaldo records. When comparing makers at a furniture showroom in Dubai, ask the consultant to name the frame material and the suspension, and to put both in writing.
Which certifications cover down and foam fillings?
Cushion fillings dictate comfort and longevity. Flexform says its goose down carries the Assopiuma Gold Label certification, a standard covering raw material quality and responsible practices, while also offering non-animal alternatives, Flexform notes. The Gold Label is a named certification, so a showroom can be asked to show it.
Foam is the other filling a buyer meets. B&B Italia names cold moulded polyurethane foam as the technology it brought to furniture with the Coronado frame. A buyer should ask the retailer which foam and which filling each cushion uses, and treat a vague answer such as premium padding as no answer.
Where does the solid wood come from?
An Italian-made label does not guarantee Italian-sourced timber. Ceccotti Collezioni traces its origins to the 1956 foundation of Ceccotti Aviero in Cascina, between Florence and Pisa, yet 90 per cent of its solid wood comes from US plantations holding SFI and FSC certification, Ceccotti Collezioni says. A buyer should therefore ask for the forestry certification of the timber rather than rely on the country name.
Porada started making chairs in 1948 and was established as a company in 1968 by Luigi Allievi in Cabiate, near Como, working in solid wood. Porada owns 220 hectares of forest in Burgundy, purchased from 2011, containing 15,900 cubic metres of ash and oak, enough for 80 years of production needs, with all suppliers and subcontractors based in Brianza, Porada adds.

What adhesives hold the components together?
Glue holds the frame together and ends up inside the room, so the type of adhesive matters to anyone furnishing a bedroom or a closed apartment. Ceccotti Collezioni says it assembles parts with formaldehyde-free vinyl glues, and the maker’s sustainability page is where to read it.
A buyer can request the maker’s statement on the glue used in the frame, and compare it with what Ceccotti Collezioni publishes.
Which European standards test sofa safety and durability?
Testing protocols define what a sofa can withstand. EN 1021-1:2014 tests the ignitability of material combinations such as covers and fillings in upholstered seating using a smouldering cigarette, measuring the material combination rather than a finished item, the Estonian Centre for Standardisation and Accreditation (EVS) lists. EN 1021-2:2014 is the match-flame equivalent test for upholstered furniture.
EN 12520:2024 sets minimum safety, strength and durability requirements for all types of domestic seating for adults, adding side-to-side durability, finger entrapment and shear and compression tests, though it excludes the durability of upholstery materials, EVS documents. The two standards answer different questions: ignition of cover and filling materials, and strength of the seat structure. CATAS operates as a testing laboratory for the wood and furniture industry, running mechanical safety, strength, durability and fire reaction tests and acts as a product certification body, CATAS states. A test report from such a laboratory, naming the standard and the sofa model, is the document to request.
What paperwork should a buyer request?
Paperwork shows what a showroom can back up. B&B Italia supplies a technical datasheet with leather maintenance instructions and a fabric sample with washing instructions for upholstered products, B&B Italia says. Request such sheets before committing, so the care requirements suit the household.
Textile safety carries its own verification. OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 certifies textiles tested for harmful substances, testing every thread, button and accessory against a list of over 1,000 harmful substances, OEKO-TEX states. Asking a retailer to produce the OEKO-TEX certificate for the chosen fabric shows that the textile itself was tested for harmful substances.
| Maker | Founded | Where | Documented construction or material fact |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flexform | 1959 | Meda | Cowhide webbing paired with a metal structure and Assopiuma Gold Label goose down |
| B&B Italia | 1966 | Novedrate | Iron frame matched with cold moulded polyurethane foam |
| Porada | 1968 | Cabiate | 220 hectares of Burgundy forest supplying ash and oak |
| Ceccotti Collezioni | 1956 | Cascina | Formaldehyde-free vinyl glues for assembly |
| Bonaldo | 1936 | Villanova di Camposampiero | Iron bedsteads, meshes and mattresses |
Flexform began in a small artisan workshop in Brianza and now has a single production site in Meda where design and manufacturing sit side by side, Flexform recounts. B&B Italia lists its administrative headquarters at Novedrate, in the province of Como. A maker that names its production site, as Flexform does, is easier to hold to account than one that names only a brand, so ask where the sofa in front of you is built.
